Last year, Luciano Meirelles, co-owner of Luciano Cigars, presented a limited-edition cigar called Maria Lucia that only came in one size. It was named after his late mother. Now, the cigar is a regular-production brand and Meirelles has added three more sizes to the line. They will be introduced at the upcoming PCA trade show and ship to retailers shortly after.

Maria Lucia consists of a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, two binders from Ecuador (one grown from Sumatra seed, the other Havana ’92) and a filler blend from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Peru. According to the company, the cigars are medium-to-full in terms of strength.

The new sizes in the line are the result of feedback from both customers and retailers. Maria Lucia is offered in the original vitola, Magnum Box Pressed, measuring 5 1/4 inches by 54 ring gauge ($12.96); Cañonazo Box Pressed, 5 7/8 by 52 ($12.80); Double Robusto Box Pressed, 6 1/2 by 50 ($12.50); and Corona Gorda Box Pressed, 5 5/8 by 46 ($11.50). The cigars are made in Estelí, Nicaragua, at the Luciano Tabacos S.A. factory in a smaller facility known as the Maria Lucia unit.

When originally released, Maria Lucia came in boxes of 12 but now all sizes ship in boxes of 24 cigars. The boxes and bands are both adorned with a portrait of Maria Lucia that was done by Meirelles’ eldest daughter Deborah. The original artwork will be on display at the Luciano Cigars booth at the PCA trade show.
